Lifelong Consequences of Severe Spinal Accidents

The effects of a serious accident can be both profound and devastating for anyone, and the injuries that result can vary significantly. With respect to motorcycle, car, truck wrecks and other accidents of the like, there is great risk of serious impact or jerking injuries such as whiplash and even spinal damage. Unfortunately, even the most minor of spinal injuries can impact a person’s quality of life. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX catastrophic personal injury attorneys take a look at common accidents that can cause spinal cord injuries and the lifelong impacts of severe spinal damage.

The Dangers of Damage to your Spinal Cord

Your spinal cord consists of a tube of tissue running the length of your spine. When the nerves that are housed here are impaired, you may lose partial or full muscle control and sensation.

Typically, the symptoms of spinal cord injuries depend on the location of damage or impact, and injuries occurring up the spine closer toward the brain affect more of the body than damage to lower portions. For example, damage to the upper part of the spinal cord can cause paralysis in the majority of the body and affect all limbs, while injury to the lumbar or other lower area of the spine may only affect a person’s lower body and legs.

Paralysis is a common outcome of spinal cord damage, and it can occur either immediately upon impact or gradually over time from internal bleeding and swelling. Other symptoms of spinal cord damage can include numbness, tingling, or changes/loss of sensation in the hands and feet, abnormal or uncomfortable positions of the head or spine, pain or pressure in the head, neck, or back, or problems with walking. Additionally, damage can cause weakness in any part of the body, loss of bladder and bowel control, difficulty breathing, and changes in sexual function.

Common Accidents Leading to Spinal Injury

Though nearly any accident has the potential to cause spinal damage, two of the most common documented causes of spinal injuries are serious falls and motor vehicle accidents. Of course, there are other factors specific to each incident of injury that can affect the overall outcome. These may include whether or not protective gear was worn, the force at which the fall occurred, or the speed of the vehicles present in the accident. Other common accidents that can cause a spinal injury are commercial truck accidents, pedestrian accidents, bike accidents, motorcycle accidents, work injuries, slip-and-falls, and acts of violence, such as sustaining a bullet injury.
